About This Station

OzeWeather is run from a Davis Vantage Pro 2 with 24-hour fan-aspirated radiation shield in the town of Broken Hill, New South Wales.

The OzeWeather system updates to the receiver every 2.5 seconds.

  • The data is collected in the console and transfered to the OzeGroup WLAN via a Davis WeatherlinkIP logger.
  • From the WLAN, OzeWeather's server PC picks up the data and crunches and stores the data using Weather Display software.
  • Weather Display uploads the data in TEXT format to the 'dot com' server. (WD also uploads webcam images and graphs etc)
  • OzeWeather.com reads the text file and in-turn displays relevant data.

  • Updates are uploaded to OzeWeather.com as well as the Davis Weatherlink website ( http://bit.ly/dfllcs ) and Weather Underground ( http://bit.ly/aqe3ee )

WeatherUnderground data and Weatherlink updates are sporadic, however, are regularly around 1 - 2 minute intervals

    Twitter is fed with a forecast 0900, 1200, 1500 & 2100 ( follow : ozeweather )

All nerd love their toys. You can see the wind sensor on the antenna for 70cm and 2m VHF communications, while a folded dipole crosses the picture... mainly used for 40 & 80m HF communications.

    About This City

Broken Hill is an isolated mining city in the far west of outback New South Wales, Australia. The world's largest mining company, BHP Billiton, has roots in the town. Broken Hill is located near the border with South Australia on the crossing of the Barrier Highway (national route 32) and the Silver City Highway (national route 79), in the Barrier Range. It is 220 m (722 ft) above sea level, an average rainfall of 235 mm (9 in) and summer temperatures that reach well over 40 °C (104 °F). The closest major city is Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, which is more than 500 km (311 mi) to the southwest. Unlike the rest of New South Wales, Broken Hill (and the surrounding region) observes Australian Central Standard Time, UTC+9:30, a time zone it shares with South Australia and the Northern Territory.

Broken Hill has been called The Silver City, the Oasis of the West, and the Capital of the Outback.

Broken Hill has a desert climate (BWk) under the Köppen climate classification. Winter in Broken Hill can be very cold and dry, while summers are highly variable — mostly hot and dry. The average maximum during the summer months (November to March) is about 32 °C (90 °F) with an average of 25% humidity, although occasional rainfall and cooler weather exist. Dust storms are a common problem in the desert but the people of Broken Hill created reserves to surround the town thus protecting the town from the worst of the storms
